The Platform, Morecambe - review by Helen Burns
Lovely venue, this, in Morecambe’s old railway station, right in the middle of this slightly seedy seaside town which has always been Blackpool’s poor relation. It was very spacious although all the cabaret style tables were taken very quickly and it was standing room only at the back. Shame about the staff being recruited from a fiendish genetic experiment to breed a super race of hostile, charmless gits.
Clothes were the usual T shirt, twisty jeans and trainers and hair still hippy intacta.
The audience wasn’t particularly familiar with Glenn and Squeeze, except for the really famous hits, so it was hard work for Glenn. But they were on the whole good and enthusiastic, with very little irritating chat during songs (except for the table behind us, naturally). Can’t remember much about the setlist, but Maidstone did put in an appearance thanks to Rona shouting it out for me (my voice is too feeble).
Glenn lost a string from the 6 string at one point and when it was handed back to him duly fixed by his little helpers for the night, he attempted Up The Junction on both guitars – alternating between the two.
He did one encore. The shows do seem a bit shorter this tour, but he puts so much into his shows it’s hardly noticeable. He went for one costume change to the Gents and oddly came back on stage in the same clothes. He seems to be enjoying himself on this tour, much of this due to how relaxing he finds it touring compared to getting his new album ready!
All in all this was a goodie, even though the shutters on the bar came down before Glenn had even said ‘Thanks for coming, goodnight’.
Oh, did I mention how miserable the staff were, by the way?
