Bilston - review by Helen Burns
Ok, nobody could ever accuse me of apathy. 3 hours sleep, into work first thing and STILL puts in a review.
After getting lost, getting there late and having to park next to the skip, I finally got to The Robin and perched on the little balcony half way across the room. The place was pretty much full to capacity with maybe 250-300 people there. Glenn bounced on stage very happy at 9.15, and immediately launched into a new song, called Hostage - which was lovely.
He’s now one of the 8 or so copies of Glenn (called The Tilbrooks’) who work for him and go touring in his place. He’s a copy of the 1983-5 long haired Tilbrook. The real Glenn Tilbrook is apparently a rather bitter twisted individual who lives behind a black curtain and won’t see anybody.
So yes, the hair was still long, too long for a fringe now and about shoulder length. He was wearing the usual twisty jeans and dark grey lace up trainers, with a black Cornell Hurd Band T shirt. Still smoking, alas.
Apologies to you setlist lovers, as I can’t get myself sufficiently organised to do these, but songs which I do remember were:
Genitalia of a fool Neptune, Always on my Mind Day I get home TMIY Another Nail SFP Hope fell down Voodoo Chile Goodbye Girl Third Rail One I don’t know which had something like ‘Hippy Dippy Name Droppy’ in the lyrics - I’m sure somebody out there knows what this song is. Did he say it was by Steve Marriott? Domino (or a bit of it, anyway, as he couldn’t remember it). I won’t ever go drinking again? UTJ Parallel World This summer No Place Like Home I’m a believer California Dreamin’ Piccadilly
Disappointingly a string broke during Goodbye Girl so we only got two 12 string numbers and no Maidstone (sniff). One chap kept trying for Satisfied or House of Love (hahahahaha!).
There was one good encore, after which everyone stopped applauding, so there weren’t any more! He finished at about 11-ish.
It seems that the album is still on course for Spring, and Glenn hopes to tour with a small band - hopefully including the lovely Simon Hanson on drums. He’s doing a bit more recording for it next week, but from what I’ve heard of it, it sounds really wonderful. Really REALLY wonderful.
I might add a bit more when I’ve had some sleep, but maybe it’s best if I don’t do it in work time……..
