LIVERPOOL LOMAX - review by Helen Burns

never thought I’d find myself disappointed with a Glenn gig but sadly, the gig at the Lomax was the first time. After all the anticipation, Glenn and The Party were a bit of a let-down and left me feeling thoroughly deflated with their lacklustre performance.

Well, obviously NOT! Anyone who knows me will instantly recognise a cheap attention-grabbing opener when they see one, before I launch into my usual passionate, effusive rant – but I promise you that this gig was deserving of that. It left me speechlessly high and even more inarticulate than usual. The sheer energy and enthusiasm of The Party swept everybody along on wave after wave of new Glenn and old Squeeze.

It’s difficult to remember highlights and I have little to add to the other reviews that have already appeared. But I’d remember the audience singing perfect backing vocals to Black Coffee in Bed and Electric Trains; leaping around to the sheer joy of Up the Creek and Hourglass; Stephen Large climbing onto the keyboards for a vocoder version of the Take Me vocals; the rather lovely Simon Hanson falling through his drum kit; Dan Glendinning giving it some in You See Me and Andy Metcalfe being generally weird and wonderful.

And Glenn loving every minute of it and being a thoroughly happy chappie, sporting a very fetching short haircut and fending off barbed comments relating to Charlton’s 0-4 drubbing by Liverpool the previous day.

And as for me – being even happier than Glenn with all my bestest mates around me and not quite believing there are no more gigs on the horizon.

It doesn’t get much better than this, you know. Get the album and join in the party.
